There are no restrictions. You do not need a driver, and medications do NOT need to be held.

Trigger points are tight, tender “knots” of muscle commonly found in the neck and upper back. They are sometimes related to stress, poor posture, or overuse injury. Trigger point injections work by injecting an anesthetic directly into the affected muscle, allowing it to relax and improving blood flow to the area.

The procedure is quick (5-10 minutes) and tolerated well. During your visit, a brief history and examination will be completed first. The muscles requiring treatment will then be cleaned with alcohol and injected with a small amount of local anesthetic. Sometimes, rhythmic needling is done to the area while the medication is injected. The physician will then continue until all affected areas are “released.”

Localized or regional numbness will occur, and soreness can occur for a day or two after the numbness wears off. More significant side effects, such as excessive bleeding or infection, are rare.

Results may vary, but many patients experience relief for weeks to months after treatment. Addressing underlying causes, such as tension and posture, achieves optimal results. To extend the benefits, we recommend continuing other treatments, such as physical or myofascial (massage) therapy, NSAIDs, and regular exercise. If symptoms recur, the injections can be repeated periodically.
